Dell had hinted at the end of 2019 that it could take an interest in AMD products to strengthen its laptop offer. It’s now done, with the G5 15 SE gaming model, equipped with a Ryzen processor and a Radeon graphics card.
In the wake of the first AMD announcements at CES 2020, many laptop manufacturers have followed suit: Dell is one of them, since the brand, despite being Intel’s historic partner, has just lifted the veil on a new variation of his G5 15 laptop, renamed “G5 15 Special Edition” for the occasion. And what is special about it? Well, as we could imagine, it ships the chips newly announced by AMD: Ryzen 3, 5 or 7 series 4000 on the processor side (Ryzen 7 4800H at most), and a Radeon RX 5600M on the graphics card side.
If the general design of the PC can be debated, especially this screen back a bit too flashy for our taste, the elements of the technical sheet remain solid: the keyboard will benefit from an RGB backlight on 4 zones, the storage space can be split between SSD and mechanical hard drive, and the screen will offer a Full HD definition, with possible support for FreeSync and a refresh rate of 144 Hz. Dell also specifies that the integration of AMD components allows advanced management of the latter: this management will take the form of a system called “Smartshift”, which will ensure a judicious distribution of consumption needs between CPU, external GPU and integrated GPU.
Finally, Dell specifies that the most affordable version of the G5 15 will be around $ 799, for availability during the month of April.
