In October 2018, Apple unveiled new versions of the iPad Pro , completely redesigned in design and function. Available in 11.9 and 12.9 inch configurations, tablets are characterized by an ultra-thin design and an almost edge-to-edge screen, capable of guaranteeing large diagonals in a smaller body. Given the new front panel, the iPad Pro abandon the previous Touch ID in favor of Face ID , the face recognition system already introduced on the iPhone X
The computing power is very high, thanks to the A12X Bionic processor with laptop class performance, while the communication port changes: Lightning is abandoned in favor of USB-C, to connect third-party accessories.
During the event of October 30, 2018, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Apple presented a real revolution for its professional tablet: the new iPad Pro arrive , updated in both design and function. Modern devices, light, with very high performance and updated to Face ID , for an experience also completed by a new version of the bitten apple stylus: Apple Pencil 2 .
What are the characteristics of these new products and, above all, what are the availability and prices? Below, all useful information.
The new iPad Pro, offered in 11- and 12.9-inch screen configurations, were immediately available in pre-order after the event in Brooklyn, for a distribution in stores on November 7th. In addition to the diagonal screen, the user can choose the sidereal gray or silver colors, as well as storage configurations between 64 GB and 1 TB of space, then the only Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular variants.
By simplifying, the Apple price lists and the resulting prices can be summarized as follows:

As usual, prices incorporate VAT at 22% and any statutory charges on storage media. At the same time, the previous 10.5-inch edition of the iPad Pro remains on sale, starting at 739 euros depending on storage capacity.
The new iPad Pro is characterized above all by a great revolution in the design front , just as it has not happened for a long time for the Cupertino tablet line. The chosen material is always anodized aluminum , as already mentioned in the silver and gray sidereal shades, for a body that is more minimalist and less cumbersome. The merit is the introduction of a new screen , practically edge-to-edge considering how the frames are really small. This choice made it possible to guarantee the usual visual and interaction spaces with the tablet, making it much less cumbersome. Just think, for example, how the total thickness of the device is only 5.9 mm.
The new display has also allowed Apple to achieve perfect symmetry on the front surface, eliminating the need for a Home key and the corresponding Touch ID fingerprint reader. The new iPads are in fact compatible with the Face ID technologies , the three-dimensional face recognition system already introduced with iPhone X, thanks to the inclusion of TrueDepth cameras and sensors . Unlike the smartphone of the group, however, it was not necessary to sacrifice the panel with a top notch: the small side edges allowed to insert all the components without compromise.
Also disappears the jacks for headphones, so as to maintain a sufficient thinness of the device, while reconfirmed are the four speakers – two short side of the device – so as to ensure a perfect audio experience. The Lighting port, meanwhile, leaves room for the new USB-C to enable new functions and, furthermore, magnetic elements are added to connect the accessories. The rear camera, however, remains protuberant with respect to the body.
Even Apple Pencil undergoes a complete redesign and, in addition to being less cumbersome and lighter, incorporates a touch surface for additional commands and wireless charging, the latter possible by simply magnetically connecting the stylus to the tablet.
The aesthetic innovations introduced in the new iPad Pro are supported by a great work also on the hardware sector , for tablet completely redesigned and extremely powerful: the iPad Pro, in fact, see laptop class performance and, from the tests conducted by Apple, in most tasks are faster than the main notebooks on the market today. Above all the new processor, the A12X Bionic , but also a perfect integration with the software.
Going into more detail of the technical specifications of the renewed iPad Pro, the most important factors are shown below.
Screen : both tablets are equipped with Liquid Retina Display panels , respectively 11 and 12.9 inches. With a pixel density of 264 ppi, for 2.388 × 1.668 and 2.732 × 2.048, the screens guarantee a great color rendering thanks to the support of the TrueTone technology, the P3 range, the ProMotion system that automatically adapts the display frequency according to the need , with a low reflection factor and excellent brightness of 600 nits;
Processor : The 2018 edition of the iPad Pro includes a Bionic A12X processor , associated with the M12 motion coprocessor and Apple’s Neural Engine. Capable of processing five thousand billion operations per second, and equipped with a machine learning system, the chip guarantees laptop performance thanks to its 7-nanometer architecture . Composed of 8 CPU cores and 7 GPUs, it can achieve multicore results by up to 90% compared to previous generations, with doubled graphics processing, so much so that it can be compared to a gaming console;
Camera : the tablet incorporates two cameras, one front and one rear. Starting from the latter, there is a lens with aperture ƒ / 1.8, consisting of 5 lenses with a 12-megapixel sensor , all accompanied by a quad-led TrueTone flash. Video recording up to 4K and 60 fps per second is also supported, with an automatic image stabilization, noise reduction and Smart HDR technology support system. On the other hand, the front panel features a 7-megapixel sensor with ƒ / 2.2 aperture, Retina Flash, automatic image stabilization, Smart HDR and Portrait Mode;
Unlocking and recognition : as already mentioned, the new iPad Pro are enabled to Face ID, thanks to the inclusion of TrueDepth cameras and sensors. The system subjects the user’s face to a three-dimensional scan through infrared and recognizes, in a few seconds, the user even in the presence of glasses, hair change, beard and other aesthetic characteristics that may change over time. TrueDepth optics, of course, work in both portrait and landscape mode and also enable additional face tracking features, for Animoji and Memoji;
Audio : the tablets have 4 speakers, two for the short side of the device, as well as three microphones, both for video recording and for FaceTime calls, therefore for the reduction of environmental noise;
Connectivity and sensors : both models support the 802.11ac WiFi standard with simultaneous dual 2.4 and 5 GHz bandwidth, with MIMO technology. Support for Bluetooth 5.0 is expected, while the Cellular version is compatible with Gigabit LTE connections . The support to the operators is made through a classic SIM card using the virtual eSIM version , while the common sensors include a digital compass, barometer, three-axis accelerometer, ambient light sensor and Beacon microlocation. The LTE edition also supports assisted GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and QZSS;
Ports : the iPad Pro 2018 are compatible with the USB-C standard , replacing the previous Lightning, which allows you to connect a large number of third-party accessories, such as displays up to 4K. Last but not least, the port can also be used to load other Apple devices, such as iPhone;
Battery : the 11-inch model provides a 29.37 watt-hour battery, while the 12.9-inch battery is up to 36.71 watt-hours. Autonomy translates into 10 hours of continuous Wi-Fi use in video playback.
The iPad “all screen” Pro are distributed with iOS 12.1 preinstalled , update of the previous iOS 12 including new features. Among the many, support for 70 new emojis as per Unicode 11 specifications, enabling eSIM for supported tablets and smartphones, a general improvement in performance and, not least, group calls on FaceTime. iOS 12.1 was made available for all compatible devices on October 30th 2018.
